Contax's history dates back to 1932, when it was launched by Zeiss Ikon in Germany, originally created to compete with Leica as a rangefinder camera brand. After the war, the brand underwent several transformations. In 1975, Japan's Yashica collaborated with Zeiss to revive the Contax name, later succeeded by Kyocera. This German-Japanese heritage gave Contax its unique character: Japanese precision manufacturing combined with Zeiss's premier optical design.
In 2005, Kyocera announced its exit from the camera market, officially discontinuing Contax. Paradoxically, the discontinuation only elevated Contax's legendary status. The Contax T2 and T3 compact cameras, equipped with Zeiss Sonnar lenses and titanium bodies, became "holy grail" items in the film photography community, with secondhand prices multiplying several times over in recent years.
Contax's allure lies in the distinctive imaging character of Zeiss lenses—colors that are rich without being excessive, contrast that is strong yet not harsh, and bokeh that is beautifully layered. This "Zeiss look" is the image quality many photographers spend a lifetime pursuing, and the fundamental reason Contax continues to command premium prices in the pre-owned market.
Contax T2, launched in 1990, is a titanium-bodied compact film camera equipped with a Zeiss Sonnar 38mm f/2.8 lens. Its understated premium appearance and sharp, color-rich images have earned it recognition as one of the most elegant compact cameras ever made. Pre-owned T2 prices have surged amid the film revival, with well-maintained examples commanding hundreds of thousands of yen. It's a favorite of celebrities and fashion circles—Kendall Jenner and BTS members have been spotted using the T2.
Contax T3 is the ultimate evolution of the T series, released in 2001. Its even more compact body houses a Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2.8 lens with faster, more accurate autofocus and a slimmer profile. The T3 commands even higher pre-owned prices than the T2, earning its status as the "king" of Contax compacts. Both silver and black titanium versions are extremely sought after.
Contax G1 / G2 is an autofocus rangefinder camera system. The G2 is considered one of the most advanced film rangefinder cameras, paired with Zeiss Planar 45mm f/2, Biogon 28mm f/2.8, and Sonnar 90mm f/2.8 lenses forming a complete shooting system. Pre-owned G2 sets have seen steadily rising prices, though they remain more accessible than the Leica M system.
Contax RTS / Aria represent the SLR system. They mount the Zeiss C/Y lens range, including the renowned Planar 50mm f/1.4, Distagon 28mm f/2.8, and Sonnar 135mm f/2.8. C/Y mount lenses can be adapted to various digital mirrorless bodies, maintaining steady demand in the pre-owned market.
Purchasing pre-owned Contax equipment requires extra caution since the brand has been discontinued for over 20 years and official repair support has ended. When selecting a T2 or T3, focus on checking whether the LCD display functions properly (LCD aging is a common T2 issue), whether the lens has fungus or hazing, and whether focus is accurate. The T3's lens barrier mechanism is somewhat fragile, so verify smooth operation.
The autofocus system on the Contax G series is a critical inspection point. The G1 and G2 use electronic passive AF, which may lack precision in low light. Test by shooting in various lighting conditions to confirm focus consistency. The G2's autofocus is notably improved over the G1; if budget allows, go directly for the G2.
Since Contax no longer has official repair service, maintenance depends entirely on independent technicians. Japan has a small number of specialists who service Contax, such as certain expert repair workshops in Tokyo, but costs are significant and wait times are long. Selecting a body that is fully functional is especially critical. Purchasing from major Japanese used camera shops typically provides a short warranty period as a buffer. C/Y mount Zeiss lens condition is relatively straightforward to assess—primarily check glass, aperture, and focus operation.
